An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred early morning on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 2:49 am local time near Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 61. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Panguna (pop. 2,900) located 56 km from the epicenter, Arawa (pop. 40,300) 67 km away, Kieta (pop. 3,600) 75 km away, and Buin (pop. 750) 81 km away.
