An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 3 minutes ago 90 km northeast of Chillan, Chile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 153. km beneath the epicenter near Chillan, Diguillín, Ñuble, Chile, late at night on Thursday, April 17th, 2025, at 11:59 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Coihueco (pop. 7,300) located 67 km from the epicenter, Parral (pop. 26,900) 71 km away, San Carlos (pop. 31,500) 75 km away, Linares (pop. 69,500) 78 km away, Chillan (pop. 150,400) 90 km away, and Talca (pop. 197,500) 123 km away.
