A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near San Felipe, Mexicali Municipality, Estado de Baja California, Mexico, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 8. km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, at 2:13 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rancho Dolores (pop. 22) located 17 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Vicente (pop. 4,400) located 64 km from the epicenter, Fraccionamiento del Valle (pop. 1,100)
