In our latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, we forecast U.S. annual electricity consumption will increase in 2025 and 2026, surpassing the all-time high reached in 2024. This growth contrasts with the trend of relatively flat electricity demand between the mid-2000s and early 2020s. Much of the recent and forecasted growth in electricity consumption is coming from the commercial sector, which includes data centers, and the industrial sector, which includes manufacturing establishments.

U.S. electricity consumption was essentially flat for nearly two decades. Electricity demand increases generally associated with population growth and economic growth were offset by efficiency improvements and other structural changes in the economy, such as the transition from manufacturing to service sectors that tend to consume less energy. A postdoctoral position is available in the SENTECH Chair in Broadband Wireless Multimedia Communication (BWMC: https://www.up.ac.za/sentech-chair-in-broadband-wireless-multimedia-communication) research group led by Prof. Sunil Maharaj at the University of Pretoria. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to pursue research relating to LDPC codes for quantum communications in the context of next-generation communications.

It is preferred if the candidate has prior experience in one or more of the following topics:

Position title: Lecturer
Salary range: The posted UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See the following table for the salary scale for this position https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2024-25/july-2024-scales/t15.pdf. A reasonable estimate for this position is $68,247-$192,040.

Percent time: Positions may range from part-time to full-time.

Anticipated start: Positions usually start in January, various times throughout the summer, and in August.

Review timeline: Applications are typically reviewed for summer session course needs in April, fall course needs in May, and in November for spring course needs. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.

Position duration: Appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis. Reappointments are dependent on departmental needs.
