The invention is a metamaterial, which is a material engineered to feature new and unusual properties that depend on the material’s physical structure rather than its chemical composition. In this case, the researchers built their metamaterial using a combination of simple plastics and custom-made magnetic composites. Using a magnetic field, the researchers changed the metamaterial’s structure, causing it to expand, move and deform in different directions, all remotely without touching the metamaterial.

The Moini Lab in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Princeton University is seeking a Professional Specialist with a strong background in the following areas: design of marine and offshore reinforced concrete structures (e.g., floating wave energy converters), structural design of large scale (10s of meters) structures, additive manufacturing with concrete, parametric design and fabrication workflows, finite element simulation, solid/fluid mechanics, and concrete durability in marine environments.

Previous experience in either experimental, computational, and parametric design research and experience in working in fast-paced industry environment is a plus. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to lead research projects, conducted under the direction of Professor Reza Moini and in directly collaboration with several industry partners in the area of offshore energy structures and concrete 3D-printing at large scale. Candidates will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other members of the lab.

In-brief analysis

April 23, 2025

In 2024, U.S. exports of total petroleum products increased to a record 6.6 million barrels per day (b/d) annual average. Annual U.S. petroleum product exports increased by 495,000 b/d as U.S. exports of distillate fuel oil, typically sold as diesel, and jet fuel increased compared with 2023, while exports of total motor gasoline decreased. Imports of major petroleum products, including gasoline, distillate fuel oil, and jet fuel, decreased by 210,000 b/d in 2024 compared with 2023.

Distillate fuel oil accounts for the largest share of U.S. transportation fuel exports and is the second-largest petroleum export by volume, after propane. Distillate exports increased 182,000 b/d to about 1.30 million b/d in 2024, still less than the annual record of 1.38 million b/d in 2017.

The largest destination for U.S. distillate exports is
