An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred early morning on Thursday, October 30th, 2025, at 1:19 am local time near Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 6.90 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Agaete (pop. 5,500) located 2 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Galdar (pop. 24,400) located 9 km from the epicenter, Arucas (pop. 36,300) 18 km away, Santa Brigida (pop. 19,200) 20 km away, San Bartolome de Tirajana (pop. 53,600) 21 km away, and Mogan (pop. 21,700) 22 km away. In Santa Lucia (pop. 71,900, 24 km away), Las Palmas
