The average number of active rigs per month that are drilling for oil and natural gas in the U.S. Lower 48 states has declined steadily over the past few years from a recent peak of 750 rigs in December 2022 to 517 rigs this October. The declining rig count reflects operators’ responses to declining crude oil and natural gas prices and improvements in drilling efficiencies.

Since December 2022, the oil-directed rig count has dropped 33% to 397 rigs in October 2025, and the natural gas-directed rig count has declined 23% to 120 rigs over the same period. Electrons can freeze into strange geometric crystals and then melt back into liquid-like motion under the right quantum conditions. Researchers identified how to tune these transitions and even discovered a bizarre “pinball” state where some electrons stay locked in place while others dart around freely. Their simulations help explain how these phases form and how they might be harnessed for advanced quantum technologies.

FEMA’s Assistance Field Teams are visiting impacted communities to support individuals and families who were affected by the severe storms, flooding and remnants of Typhoon Halong that occurred Oct. 8-13.

Teams are registering people impacted by the disaster for FEMA Individual Assistance and answering questions.

“We are going into these impacted communities to make FEMA assistance available to those impacted families to help them continue with their recovery” said Willie Nunn, Federal Coordinating Officer.

Staff board a flight from Bethel to Chefornak to meet with impacted individuals and conduct home inspections.

When a team is in a village, following the registration, FEMA inspectors will meet with the applicant to verify damage(s) to their home and personal property. FEMA staff will always have appropriate federal identification and will never charge for assistance.

If those who have been impacted are unable to meet with the FEMA specialists working in the field, they can also register by calling the dedicated Alaska Call Center at (866) 342-1699, Monday-Sunday from 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. or visiting disasterassistance.gov.

To find out when a FEMA team will be in your area, please follow FEMA Region 10 on X and FEMA’s Facebook for the latest updates.
