An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred early evening on Friday, November 21st, 2025, at 7:50 pm local time near Christchurch, Christchurch City, Canterbury, New Zealand, as reported by New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 24.60 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Southbridge (pop. 1000) located 20 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Leeston (pop. 2,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, Ashburton (pop. 20,600) 27 km away, Tinwald (pop. 3,800) 28 km away, Lincoln (pop. 9,200) 46 km away, Rolleston (pop. 33,200) 47 km away, Christchurch (pop. 363,900) 64 km
