A magnitude 2.8 earthquake near Star Valley Ranch, Lincoln County, Wyoming, USA, was reported 33 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 8.4 miles beneath the epicenter late at night on Friday, July 11th, 2025, at 11:30 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Star Valley Ranch (pop. 1,500) located 2 miles from the epicenter. In Afton (pop. 2,000, 19 miles away), Hoback (pop. 1,200, 21 miles away), South Park (pop. 1,700, 30 miles away), Rafter J Ranch (pop. 1,100, 30 miles away), Jackson (pop. 10,500, 35 miles away), Conda (pop. 21,300, 35 miles away), and Moose Wilson Road (pop. 1,800, 37 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
