A new eruption started at the volcano, the first recorded in historic times, ending a century-long period of dormancy. The eruption began Sunday early morning (4:50 am local time, or 16:50 pm GMT on 2 Aug) with explosions from a summit vent that sent ash plumes to 3-4 km (10,000-12,000 ft) altitude.
Krasheninnikov is a snow-clad majestic Krasheninnikov stratovolcano is the central part of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, and belongs to the very active eastern chain of volcanoes in Kamchatka. There are no nearby larger populated places; its eruption is not posing much threat to infrastructure. The nearest town, Milkovo, is about 150 km away.
Explosive activity has increased and ash plumes are now reaching 5-6 km (15,000-20,000 ft) altitude. Ash fall has been recorded
