Just 26 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Napier, Napier City, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The tremor was recorded late at night on Friday, July 18th, 2025, at 11:00 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 33.20 km below the surface.
The event was filed by New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tuai (pop. 280) located 21 km from the epicenter, Tiniroto (pop. 1,500) 33 km away, Wairoa (pop. 4,300) 46 km away, and Wairoa (pop. 4,900) 48 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Napier (pop. 66,700) located 100 km from the epicenter, Taupo (pop. 26,500) 100 km away, and Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 102 km away.
