An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred in the morning on Saturday, July 19th, 2025, at 9:34 am local time near Basco, Batanes, Cagayan Valley, Philippines, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 48. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sabtang (pop. 1,700) located 64 km from the epicenter, Ivana (pop. 1,400) 70 km away, Uyugan (pop. 1,400) 71 km away, Mahatao (pop. 1,700) 76 km away, and Basco (pop. 7,300) 80 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If
