An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred only 13 minutes ago 94 km southwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Kamchatka, Russia, around noon on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025, at 12:04 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.5. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Paratunka (pop. 1,800) located 68 km from the epicenter, Vilyuchinsk (pop. 25,200) 77 km away, and Yelizovo (pop. 40,700) 83 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy (pop. 181,200) located 94 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and
