An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred in the evening on Tuesday, July 29th, 2025, at 8:11 pm local time near Passau, Lower Bavaria, Bavaria, Germany, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 15. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ruderting (pop. 3,100) located 3 km from the epicenter, Salzweg (pop. 6,800) 5 km away, Passau (pop. 50,600) 6 km away, Hutthurm (pop. 6,000) 7 km away, Furstenzell (pop. 7,700) 13 km away, Hauzenberg (pop. 12,500) 16 km away, and Vilshofen (pop. 16,700) 17 km away. In Deggendorf (pop. 31,100, 42 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
