An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred early afternoon on Friday, July 18th, 2025, at 3:30 pm local time near Shwebo, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar (Burma), as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Shwebo (pop. 88,900) located 39 km from the epicenter, and Mogok (pop. 90,800) 56 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ye-u (pop. 20,500) located 69 km from the epicenter, Mandalay (pop. 1,208,100) 70 km away, Pyin Oo Lwin (pop. 117,300) 75 km away, Sagaing (pop. 78,700)
