An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 occurred only 11 minutes ago 52 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 64. km beneath the epicenter near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Kamchatka, Russia, around noon on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025, at 12:16 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 6.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Vilyuchinsk (pop. 25,200) located 49 km from the epicenter, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy (pop. 181,200) 52 km away, and Paratunka (pop. 1,800) 59 km away.
In Yelizovo (pop. 40,700) located 72 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
