France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Japan near Tomakomai, Tomakomai Shi, Hokkaido, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 11:54 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Niikappu (pop. 5,700) located 54 km from the epicenter, Shizunai-furukawacho (pop. 22,400) 56 km away, Tomakomai (pop. 174,800) 75 km away, Noboribetsu (pop. 46,400) 76 km away, Muroran (pop. 96,200) 81 km away, Chitose (pop. 98,000) 93 km away, Mutsu (pop. 56,200) 95 km away, Hakodate (pop. 275,700) 97 km away, and Sapporo (pop. 1,973,800) 127 km away.
