A very shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported after midnight near Provo, Utah County, Utah, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at 12:11 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Independence (pop. 170) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Springville (pop. 32,300) located 18 miles from the epicenter, Provo (pop. 115,300) 19

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake near Honiara, Solomon Islands, was reported only 11 minutes ago by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at 5:04 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.6, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.5, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Malango (pop. 10,500) located 11 km from the epicenter.
In Honiara (pop. 56,300) located 48 km from the epicenter, and Tulagi (pop. 1,800) 91 km away, the quake should have
