An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred only 13 minutes ago 123 km south of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 99. km beneath the epicenter near Fayzabad, Fayzabad District, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, early morning on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 3:14 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Parun (pop. 1000) located 71 km from the epicenter, Jurm (pop. 12,100) 97 km away, Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 123 km away, Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 123 km away, Taloqan (pop. 64,300) 126 km away, and Bazarak (pop. 65,000) 126 km away.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred early morning on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 3:14 am local time near Fayzabad, Fayzabad District, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 94. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 6.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 6.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Asmar (pop. 15,700) located 124 km from the epicenter, Bazarak (pop. 65,000) 126 km away, Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 127 km away, Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 127 km away, and Taloqan (pop. 64,300) 130 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
