Just 13 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Chiba, Chiba Shi, Japan. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Sunday, April 20th, 2025, at 3:11 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 80. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yachimata (pop. 68,800) located 6 km from the epicenter, Togane (pop. 66,300) 8 km away, Oami (pop. 53,200) 9 km away, Yotsukaido (pop. 95,300) 13 km away, Sakura (pop. 173,700) 14 km away, Chiba (pop. 979,800) 17 km away, Narita (pop. 132,900) 20 km away, Ichihara (pop. 283,500) 22 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 56 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,761,600) 62 km away.
