The Solomon Islands was shaken near Gizo, New Georgia Group, Western Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 only 10 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Gizo, New Georgia Group, Western Province, Solomon Islands, in the evening on Friday, May 2nd, 2025, at 9:59 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.6. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Buin (pop. 750) located 53 km from the epicenter, Panguna (pop. 2,900) 105 km away, Kieta (pop. 3,600) 107 km away, and Arawa (pop. 40,300) 108 km away,
