An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred in the evening on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 9:48 pm local time near 28 de Noviembre, Güer Aike Department, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In 28 de Noviembre (pop. 4,700) located 21 km from the epicenter, Rio Turbio (pop. 6,700) 25 km away, Yacimientos Rio Turbio (pop. 6,700) 25 km away, and Puerto Natales (pop. 20,000) 46 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Calafate (pop. 8,000) located 126 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience

Argentina was shaken near 28 de Noviembre, Güer Aike Department, Santa Cruz Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 21 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near 28 de Noviembre, Güer Aike Department, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, in the evening on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 9:48 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
