An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred only 24 minutes ago 22 miles south of Bakersfield, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3.7 miles beneath the epicenter near Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA, around noon on Monday, May 19th, 2025, at 12:09 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mettler (pop. 140) located 4 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lamont (pop. 15,100) located 16 miles from the epicenter, Arvin (pop. 20,900) 16 miles away, Bakersfield (pop. 373,600) 22 miles away, Rosedale (pop. 14,100) 24 miles away, Oildale (pop. 32,700) 26 miles away, Shafter (pop. 18,300) 34 miles away, and Wasco (pop. 26,300) 41 miles away. In Valencia (pop. 148,500, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred around noon on Monday, May 19th, 2025, at 12:09 pm local time near Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well.
32,700) 26 miles
