An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 16 minutes ago 57 miles northwest of Elko, Nevada, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.4 miles beneath the epicenter near Elko, Elko County, Nevada, USA, early morning on Wednesday, May 14th, 2025, at 5:35 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Valmy (pop. 37) located 27 miles from the epicenter, Battle Mountain (pop. 3,600) 32 miles away, Golconda (pop. 210) 37 miles away, Carlin (pop. 2,300) 45 miles away, Crescent Valley (pop. 390) 49 miles away, Winnemucca (pop. 7,900) 49 miles away, and Elko (pop. 20,300) 57 miles away.
