El Salvador was shaken near Usulutan, Departamento de Usulutan, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 10 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 65. km beneath the epicenter near Usulutan, Departamento de Usulutan, El Salvador, around noon on Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, at 12:32 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto El Triunfo (pop. 19,100) located 33 km from the epicenter, Usulutan (pop. 51,900) 41 km away, San Rafael Oriente (pop. 19,100) 47 km away, La Union (pop. 26,800) 81 km away, Cojutepeque (pop. 48,400) 94 km away, Soyapango (pop. 329,700) 106 km away, and San Salvador (pop. 526,000) 108
