An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred early morning on Monday, June 2nd, 2025, at 3:51 am local time near Erimo, Horoizumi-gun, Hokkaido, Japan, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 40. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Erimo (pop. 4,400) located 44 km from the epicenter, Hiroo (pop. 7,200) 57 km away, Honcho (pop. 4,500) 66 km away, and Urakawa (pop. 12,800) 77 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Obihiro (pop. 166,500) located 126 km from the epicenter, Otofuke (pop. 44,200) 134 km away, and Kushiro (pop. 167,900) 142 km away.
