An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred early morning on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at 5:22 am local time near Puquio, Lucanas Province, Ayacucho, Peru, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 6.1 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Tambo (pop. 5,000) located 13 km from the epicenter, and Puquio (pop. 10,500) 17 km away.
In Coracora (pop. 7,400) located 43 km from the epicenter, and Nazca (pop. 23,600) 104 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If
