An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred early afternoon on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at 2:20 pm local time near Ukiah, Mendocino County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 0.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Willits (pop. 4,900) located 0 miles from the epicenter.
In Brooktrails (pop. 3,200) located 2 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Redwood Valley (pop. 1,700) located 13 miles from the epicenter.
