The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.5 quake in the Democratic Republic of the Congo near Katanda, Rutshuru, Province du Nord-Kivu, only 27 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Sunday, May 4th, 2025, at 8:11 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kihihi (pop. 21,800) located 15 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Katanda (pop. 42,100) located 35 km from the epicenter, Kayna (pop. 51,100) 50 km away, Kanyobagonga (pop. 44,100) 51 km away, Kirumba (pop.
