An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 15 minutes ago 94 km northeast of Laoang, Philippines, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 40. km beneath the epicenter near Laoang, Northern Samar, Eastern Visayas, Philippines, around noon on Wednesday, May 7th, 2025, at 12:41 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Anito (pop. 2,100) located 71 km from the epicenter, Gamay (pop. 9,100) 74 km away, Arteche (pop. 5,000) 75 km away, Oras (pop. 9,000) 84 km away, Palapag (pop. 8,300) 84 km away, Dolores (pop. 9,300) 91 km away, and Laoang (pop. 16,700) 94 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If
