The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 2.9 quake in Greece near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 12:27 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.1, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.1.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Skourta (pop. 980) located 7 km from the epicenter, Aspropyrgos (pop. 30,300) 10 km away, Petroupolis (pop. 59,000) 16 km away, Petroúpolis (pop. 59,000) 16 km away, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 17 km away, Ilion (pop. 84,800) 18 km away, Peristeri (pop. 140,000) 19 km away, Nikaia (pop. 89,400) 22 km away, and Athens (pop. 664,000) 24 km away.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred in the afternoon on Tuesday, April 15th, 2025, at 5:16 pm local time near Salcedo, Dominican Republic, as reported by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4.90 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Blanco Abajo (pop. 370) located 2 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Salsipuedes (pop. 11,700) located 18 km from the epicenter, Salcedo (pop. 45,300) 22 km away, San Francisco de Macoris (pop. 124,800) 27 km away, Moca (pop. 61,800) 29 km away, Tamboril (pop. 23,300) 34 km away, Monte Llano (pop. 19,000) 38 km away, and Santiago de los Caballeros (pop. 1,200,000) 43 km away.
