A very shallow magnitude 2.6 earthquake was reported early morning near Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025, at 1:31 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.6 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nairne (pop. 4,900) located 1 miles from the epicenter, Littlehampton (pop. 2,100) 4 miles away, Mount Barker (pop. 13,600) 4 miles away, Woodside (pop. 2,500) 6 miles away, and Hahndorf (pop. 2,700) 7 miles away. In Bridgewater (pop. 3,700, 9 miles away), Adelaide Hills (pop. 60,400, 15 miles away), Adelaide (pop. 1,387,300, 20 miles away), and Murray Bridge (pop. 14,500, 20 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
