A magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, was reported 36 minutes ago by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Australia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, at 2:18 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Peterborough (pop. 240, 16 miles away), Allansford (pop. 1,500, 21 miles away), Warrnambool (pop. 29,200, 22 miles away), Timboon (pop. 1,200, 25 miles away), Dennington (pop. 1,800, 25 miles away), Port Fairy (pop. 3,300, 29 miles away), Koroit (pop. 2,000, 30 miles away), and Terang (pop. 2,200, 35 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
