Peru was shaken near Tumbes, Provincia de Tumbes, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 9 minutes ago, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 116. km beneath the epicenter near Tumbes, Provincia de Tumbes, Peru, in the evening on Saturday, May 10th, 2025, at 8:30 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Colombian Geological Service (SGC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tacural (pop. 460) located 2 km from the epicenter, Tumbes (pop. 96,900) 9 km away, Zarumilla (pop. 16,900) 22 km away, Aguas
