An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 21 minutes ago 54 miles north of Nyngan, New South Wales, Australia, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Nyngan, Bogan, New South Wales, Australia, early morning on Saturday, May 24th, 2025, at 2:36 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nyngan (pop. 2,200) located 54 miles from the epicenter, Coonamble (pop. 2,700) 62 miles away, Brewarrina (pop. 1,200) 65 miles away, and Walgett (pop. 2,100) 69 miles away.
