A magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Blangpidie, Southwest Aceh Regency, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia, was reported only 20 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 94.75 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, at 3:57 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Blangpidie (pop. 24,100) located 34 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Meulaboh (pop. 64,600) located 111 km from the epicenter, Langsa (pop. 194,700) 115 km away, and Lhokseumawe (pop. 196,100) 143 km away.
