A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Khemisset, Khémisset Province, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Morocco, was reported only 16 minutes ago by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 23. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, at 12:16 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tiddas (pop. 3,800) located 14 km from the epicenter, Oulmes (pop. 19,000) 31 km away, Khemisset (pop. 143,600) 48 km away, Tiflet (pop. 94,700) 49 km away, and Ain El Aouda (pop. 54,400) 58 km away.
