The Philippines was shaken near Sipalay, Negros Occidental, Western Visayas, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 9 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 20. km beneath the epicenter near Sipalay, Negros Occidental, Western Visayas, Philippines, in the morning on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at 8:33 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Inayauan (pop. 10,000) located 36 km from the epicenter, and Sipalay (pop. 24,000) 37 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Asia (pop. 23,500)
