An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred around noon on Thursday, May 29th, 2025, at 12:04 pm local time near Palafrugell, Girona, Catalonia, Spain, as reported by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France’s Military Applications Division – Earth and Environmental Science (CEA), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.3.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Tamariu (pop. 290, 55 km away), Palafrugell (pop. 22,400, 58 km away), Palamos (pop. 18,200, 60 km away), Sant Feliu de Guixols (pop. 22,000, 68 km away), Lloret de Mar (pop. 39,400, 84 km away), and Girona (pop. 96,200, 87 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
