A shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported in the evening near Pyrgos, Ilia Prefecture, West Greece, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Sunday, May 25th, 2025, at 9:59 pm local time at a shallow depth of 13.40 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.5, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.6, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Olympia (pop. 1,200) located 2 km from the epicenter, Makrisia (pop. 1,900) 3 km away, Platanos (pop. 1,800) 4 km away, and Krestena (pop. 1,900)
