Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Indonesia near Lahewa, North Nias Regency, North Sumatra, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Monday, May 19th, 2025, at 3:04 pm local time at a shallow depth of 18. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lahewa (pop. 24,500) located 20 km from the epicenter, and Gunungsitoli (pop. 136,700) 51 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Teluk Dalam (pop. 25,800) located 101 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around
