An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, at 10:36 am local time near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, Japan, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9, Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 4.9, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Tamura (pop. 35,200) located 22 km from the epicenter, Iwaki (pop. 357,300) 27 km away, Sukagawa (pop. 75,000) 33 km
