An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred only 4 minutes ago 8 km southeast of Avignon, France, France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter near Avignon, Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, France, early morning on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, at 5:35 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Morieres-les-Avignon (pop. 7,000) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Le Pontet (pop. 16,200) 5 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Avignon (pop. 89,800) located 8 km from the epicenter, Sorgues (pop. 18,700) 10 km away, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (pop. 17,000) 12 km away, Cavaillon (pop. 26,700) 15 km away, and Carpentras (pop. 29,700) 19

Latest quakesThis page is frequently updated.
The most recent quakes (above magnitude 2 for the past few hours, larger magnitudes for the rest of the past day, to limit the number to about 100 per day) are shown below with detail links for each quake.
We use multiple data sources from all over the world (currently over 20 different national and international agencies), and prioritize them in the following descending order: national institutes / agencies – USGS – EMSC – GFZ. Where data from different agencies for the same earthquake is available, you can find and compare the often differing data for magnitude, depth etc. in the detail page for each quake.
If you are looking for smaller and/or earthquakes in a specific region, you can look them up on the pages of specific countries or regions. Otherwise, there would be hundreds or thousands of earthquakes shown here.
