The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in the United States near Anchorage, Alaska, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, at 12:03 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 21 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cooper Landing (pop. 290) located 18 miles from the epicenter, Sterling (pop. 5,600) 29 miles away, Anchorage (pop. 291,200) 34 miles away, Elmendorf Air Force Base (pop. 6,600) 39 miles away, Soldotna (pop. 4,500) 39 miles away, Eagle River (pop. 24,800) 43 miles away, Eagle River (pop. 24,800) 43 miles away, and Kenai (pop. 7,700) 44 miles away.
