The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Pakistan near Uthal, Lasbela District, Balochistan, 33 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025, at 12:51 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS) at magnitude 4.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Uthal (pop. 16,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gadani (pop. 13,400) located 50 km from the epicenter, Bela (pop. 20,100) 82 km away, Goth Shams Pir (pop. 5,000) 84 km away, Karachi (pop. 11,624,200) 85 km away, and Arif Wala (pop. 157,100) 93 km away.
