Just 8 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Kesennuma, Kesennuma Shi, Miyagi, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025, at 11:45 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 100.70 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kesennuma (pop. 61,100) located 19 km from the epicenter, Ofunato (pop. 35,500) 34 km away, Tome (pop. 77,900) 48 km away, Ishinomaki (pop. 140,200) 52 km away, Ichinoseki (pop. 114,500) 52 km away, Kurihara (pop. 66,600) 61 km away, Osaki (pop. 128,800) 66 km away, and Furukawa (pop. 76,300) 68 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sendai (pop. 1,096,700) located 91 km from the epicenter.
