Just 13 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near La Ligua, Petorca Province, Region de Valparaiso, Chile. The tremor was recorded late at night on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2025, at 10:05 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 28. km below the surface.
The event was filed by The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Ligua (pop. 24,900) located 24 km from the epicenter, Cabildo (pop. 19,300) 37 km away, Quintero (pop. 31,900) 48 km away, Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) 52 km away, La Calera (pop. 50,200) 53 km away, Quillota (pop. 67,800) 61 km away, Vina del Mar (pop. 294,600) 74 km away, and Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) 77 km away.
