An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred around noon on Monday, May 26th, 2025, at 1:51 pm local time near Santa Marta, Departamento del Magdalena, Colombia, as reported by The Colombian Geological Service (SGC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 20. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Santa Marta (pop. 499,200, 20 km away), Cienaga (pop. 88,300, 37 km away), and Puebloviejo (pop. 33,700, 41 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
