An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred early morning on Thursday, June 5th, 2025, at 4:31 am local time near Jinhua, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Sheng, China, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Jinhua (pop. 53,500) located 24 km from the epicenter, Zibihu (pop. 56,200) 26 km away, and Yousuo (pop. 53,200) 36 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jiuhe (pop. 23,700) located 47 km from the epicenter, Jinding

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.5 quake in the United States near Hemet, Riverside County, California, 36 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Wednesday, June 4th, 2025, at 12:27 pm local time at a shallow depth of 9.4 miles. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mountain Center (pop. 63) located 3 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hemet (pop. 83,900) located 13 miles from the epicenter, San Jacinto (pop. 47,000) 14 miles away, Palm Springs (pop. 47,400) 16 miles away, Cathedral City (pop. 53,800) 19 miles away, Menifee (pop. 87,200) 22 miles away, Temecula (pop. 110,000) 25 miles away, and Murrieta (pop. 109,800) 27 miles away.
