The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in the United States near Akutan, Aleutians East, Alaska, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, at 3:54 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 22 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Akutan (pop. 1000) located 70 miles from the epicenter.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 20 minutes ago 73 km southeast of Arawa, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 86. km beneath the epicenter near Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, late at night on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, at 10:31 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Buin (pop. 750) located 32 km from the epicenter, Kieta (pop. 3,600) 70 km away, Panguna (pop. 2,900) 72 km away, and Arawa (pop. 40,300) 73 km away.
